Candle Care 101: Burn Smarter, Not Harder

There’s nothing cozier than lighting your favorite Wicksy candle after a long day — but did you know how you burn your candle can make or break the experience? Candle care isn’t just for aesthetics — it helps you get the most out of your scent, your jar, and your flame. Here’s how to burn smarter, not harder.

1. Trim Your Wick — Every Time

Before each burn, trim your wick to about 1/4 inch. This prevents smoky burn, uneven melting, and those pesky black mushroom tops. A trimmed wick gives you a cleaner, brighter flame and extends the life of your candle.

2. The First Burn Sets the Stage

Your first burn should last 2–4 hours or until the wax melts all the way to the edge of the jar. This sets the “memory” of the wax, ensuring even burns every time. Short first burns can cause tunneling — that annoying ring of wasted wax left behind.

3. Burn in 2–3 Hour Intervals

It’s tempting to keep your candle lit all day, but shorter burn times (2–3 hours) are ideal for scent throw and wax longevity. Anything longer can overheat the jar or cause the wick to drown.

4. Keep It Clean & Safe

Burn on a heat-resistant surface, away from fans, drafts, pets, and kids. Extinguish with a snuffer if you have one — or gently dip the wick into the wax and straighten it. Blowing it out can cause smoke and soot buildup.

5. Don’t Burn to the Bottom

Stop burning when about 1/2 inch of wax remains. Burning lower than this can crack the jar or damage surfaces underneath from the heat.

Bonus Tip: Use Our Wildflower Kit

When your Wicksy candle is done, don’t toss the jar — transform it. Each single wick comes with a soil disc and wildflower seeds so you can plant something beautiful when the scent fades. Burn. Bloom. Repeat.
